Sporting were eliminated for the sixth consecutive time against Spanish teams in the European cups, not being able to turn in Alvalade (1-0) the 2-0 defeat suffered in the stronghold of Atletico Madrid.
In 11 clashes with clubs in Spain, Sporting continue with only three qualifiers, the last having more than 30 years, having been achieved in 1985/86, against Atletico de Bilbao (1-2 in Bilbao and 3-0 at home) in the third round of the UEFA Cup.
Before, the lions overcame Valencia in 1968/69 in the first round of the Fairs Cup (4-0 at home and 1-4 away after extra time) and Sevilla in 1983/84 at the opening round of the UEFA Cup (1-1 away and 3-2 at home).
Eliminations have gone to eight, with Atletico Madrid dropping for the second time the ‘lions’, after also balanced round of eliminations of the round of the Europa League of 2009/10 (0-0 in Spain and 2-2 in Alvalade ).
